Whether it’s a fundraiser or a New Year party, Hank Moody can give you a few tips on looking casual to make a statement against the suits (Not that I have anything against suits.)

Background

Hank Moody at a fundraiser. Never thought you’d see the day? It takes his old girlfriend, his new girlfriend, and his agent to drag him along, but Hank begrudgingly accepts his invitation to UTK’s environmental fundraiser. Among a multitude of both old and new flames, Hank scoffs at his surroundings and takes down flute after flute of champagne, ending the evening by punching a guy in the face over the hood of the guy’s Prius. Moody certainly knows how to make a fundraiser more interesting.

What’d He Wear?

Hank rolls up to the dreaded fundraiser in his black beat-up Porsche with new girlfriend Meredith on his arm. And, surprise, he actually dressed up for the occasion… in his own way.

Eschewing anything but denim, which he refers to as “the people’s fabric” in the fourth season, Hank pairs his jeans with a dark sport coat and shirt, both a bit dressier than he typically wears.

The black single-breasted sport coat has a 2-button front, narrow notch lapels (with even narrower notches), and a single rear vent. The breast and hip pockets are jetted, with a pack of Camels at home in his breast pocket. The jacket, in addition to being dressier than usual, is also fitted with front darts and a center rear vent. The lining appears to be light brown.

I'm sure you're just looking at the details of Hank's jacket.

Hank wears an extremely dark blue button-up shirt with the ensemble, so dark that it appears black in some lights and on the low-resolution quality of the DVD. As usual, his barrel cuffs are worn unbuttoned. This shirt has no front placket or breast pocket.

Although it's definitely blue, the fundraiser's lighting makes the shirt look black.

And, of course, Hank wears his usual medium-dark wash blue jeans and standard Timberland brown suede Chelsea boots. No need for any more pomp and circumstance. It is both likely and probable that Hank’s only pants are jeans, save for the black trousers of his “one and only suit”.

In addition, all other Hank accessories are in place: his Izod 725 sunglasses, the black leather hexagonal-studded bracelet, thin black braided leather bracelet, and a silver ring with double ridges on his right index finger. The bracelets are available at Urban Wrist… you’d be lucky to find a pair of Izod 725s these days.

Go Big or Go Home

Although Hank’s drink of choice is Scotch, he celebrates the occasion by indulging in the fundraiser’s open champagne bar.

Also, Hank sees no need for the environmental fundraiser to get in the way of his habits. Despite Charlie’s attempts to extinguish them, he manages to smoke several cigarettes from his box of Camel Lights with the light blue Bic lighter he carries throughout a few first season episodes.

Hank decides he will not be making any friends at the environmental fundraiser.

Upon closer examination, the actual cigarettes are Duchovny’s Honeyrose herbals again, just placed in the Camel Light box.

How to Get the Look

Very few full shots of Hank's attire in this episode. This shot looks particularly menacing, probably from a dropped subplot about Hank being a serial killer?

Want to see how Hank dresses up? Other than the suit and tie for extremely formal occasions (weddings and court hearings), Hank wears…

  • Dark navy blue button-up dress shirt with large collar, front placket, and unbuttoned barrel cuffs
  • Medium-dark wash blue denim jeans
  • Brown sueded leather Timberland “Torrance” Chelsea boots with black elastic side gussets
  • Black socks
  • Izod 725 sunglasses with brown lenses
  • Silver ring with two ridged bands, worn on the right index finger
  • Black leather bracelet with silver hexagonal and round studs, worn on the left wrist

The Quote

That is a very astute observation coming from a dumb guy.
