Air Date: November 30, 2008
Director: David Von Ancken

Background

“In Utero” (2.10) is often cited as a favorite episode among Californication fans. It serves as an origins episode for Hank and Karen, popular in this era of reboots including Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Here, we see Hank as a young, struggling writer, having just met – and subsequently knocked up – Karen. The two are anything but ready for an unexpected pregnancy, as they’re both middling in their respective careers and dating other people. Adding to the couple’s problems, news has just broken of Kurt Cobain’s death by suicide, thus dating the episode’s setting to April 8, 1994.

Of course, the baby in question turns out to be Becca, the center of Hank’s life as we know it. Given that this is the artistic center of New York City in 1994, Hank and Karen are both younger, grungier versions of themselves. Continue reading

A guy like Hank Moody doesn’t really need more than one suit. And when a guy like Hank Moody is looking for a suit, he’ll look no further than imitating the same look that worked for Steve McQueen, Samuel L. Jackson, and the cast of Reservoir Dogs.

It also helps that Hank dresses like a hitman to a wedding that he sincerely does not support.  Continue reading

Background

In the penultimate episode of Californication‘s first season, Hank Moody has spent the majority of the season wistfully hoping that his ex-wife (common law, at least) Karen will abandon her thoughts of marrying the “dial-tone” Bill and come back to Hank. He thought he had his life on track when he wrote a new novel, but it was unfortunately lost when his new car was stolen. He and Karen briefly rekindled their passions after the death of Hank’s father, but it didn’t last. Finally, Hank hit his seasonal rock bottom in “The Devil’s Threesome” when doing just that with gym rat Laura and his best friend/agent Charlie.

It’s safe to say that, by this point, Hank’s been swallowed up and shit out by the powers that be. Continue reading

By the tenth episode, Hank is now the unofficial roommate and caretaker of his agent and best friend Charlie, who’s been “kicked to the curb by his diminutive lesbian wife,” according to Hank. Background

By the time of the eighth episode of Californication, viewers have certainly become familiar with Hank Moody’s “man in black” look. Thus, when we open on a scene of Hank at his computer in a surprising purple shirt, we certainly don’t expect it to be an episode where he is grieving his father’s death the entire time. And yet, that’s exactly what happens. Continue reading

Background

A year before he became the substance-abusing turnstile of a man we’ve come to know and love, Hank Moody was a dedicated family man with several successful novels under his belt. Much like his attitude, Hank’s clothing during this “golden era” was much brighter with nary a black to be seen.

The first real glimpse Californication viewers get of this happy past life comes in the eighth episode, “California Son”. Faced with the death of his father Al (played by the ubiquitous but underrated Mark Margolis), Hank is forced to reflect on the last time he saw Al, which happened to be the summer that his relationship with Karen deteriorated. Background

As one of the first episodes to feature more heavily on the Flanderization of Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler), Hank Moody gets relatively less screen time than usual in “Girls Interrupted”, the seventh episode of Californication‘s first season.

When we do see him, the attire is all pretty standard. We do get a better look at the green button-up he wore earlier in the season and finally find out about Hank’s signature dish, an infamous conglomeration of cheese for the whole family! Continue reading

Background

Hank eases through this episode, the sixth in the first season, in some very typical Moody attire, stuff that we should be getting used to seeing by now. The most interesting change-ups for Hank are an unseen T-shirt and some overly preppy Dad clothes.

In this episode, all Hank wants to do is go see his daughter perform with her band in Venice Beach. Instead, he has his record collection stolen with his favorite T-shirt and guitar, he is forced to deal with a pedophiliac coke-addicted high school teacher, and he ends up soaked in a swimming pool. However, the night ends on a good note for our hapless hero. Continue reading
