Background
In the penultimate episode of Californication‘s first season, Hank Moody has spent the majority of the season wistfully hoping that his ex-wife (common law, at least) Karen will abandon her thoughts of marrying the “dial-tone” Bill and come back to Hank. He thought he had his life on track when he wrote a new novel, but it was unfortunately lost when his new car was stolen. He and Karen briefly rekindled their passions after the death of Hank’s father, but it didn’t last. Finally, Hank hit his seasonal rock bottom in “The Devil’s Threesome” when doing just that with gym rat Laura and his best friend/agent Charlie.
It’s safe to say that, by this point, Hank’s been swallowed up and shit out by the powers that be. Continue reading

Background
A year before he became the substance-abusing turnstile of a man we’ve come to know and love, Hank Moody was a dedicated family man with several successful novels under his belt. Much like his attitude, Hank’s clothing during this “golden era” was much brighter with nary a black to be seen.
The first real glimpse Californication viewers get of this happy past life comes in the eighth episode, “California Son”. Faced with the death of his father Al (played by the ubiquitous but underrated Mark Margolis), Hank is forced to reflect on the last time he saw Al, which happened to be the summer that his relationship with Karen deteriorated. Background
Layer Cake could be argued Daniel Craig’s test drive as Bond. While more timid than the infamous spy (“I hate guns! Although that one is very pretty…”), he plays a cunning, manipulative, and cheeky anti-hero with a conflicting but specific set of morals. He also has a pretty sharp wardrobe without resorting to Bond’s dinner jacket and martini trope. Also, much like Bond, he gets to enjoy a steamy mid-day hotel room tryst with a femme fatale, until he is rudely interrupted of course.
However, there is one major difference glaring between Daniel Craig in Layer Cake and Daniel Craig as Bond. In Layer Cake, he plays a criminal: a drug dealer, to be exact. Now, he is a drug dealer with morals, but still, I think we can all agree that drug dealing is a profession Bond would look down upon. Although, as Dan himself tells us in the film’s narration…
I’m not a gangster, just a businessman. And my commodity happens to be cocaine.

Background
As one of the first episodes to feature more heavily on the Flanderization of Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler), Hank Moody gets relatively less screen time than usual in “Girls Interrupted”, the seventh episode of Californication‘s first season.
When we do see him, the attire is all pretty standard. We do get a better look at the green button-up he wore earlier in the season and finally find out about Hank’s signature dish, an infamous conglomeration of cheese for the whole family! Continue reading

Background
Hank Moody at a fundraiser. Never thought you’d see the day? It takes his old girlfriend, his new girlfriend, and his agent to drag him along, but Hank begrudgingly accepts his invitation to UTK’s environmental fundraiser. Among a multitude of both old and new flames, Hank scoffs at his surroundings and takes down flute after flute of champagne, ending the evening by punching a guy in the face over the hood of the guy’s Prius. “Hell-A Woman” is a great early episode (the second, in fact) where we get to establish some of the more formulaic parts of Season 1: Hank has a meeting with Charlie about how he’s unable to write, Hank picks up a random woman and is undressing her within minutes, and Hank has a confrontation with Karen and Bill that shows the audience (but not Karen) what a tool Bill is! In honor of Wednesday being hump day, I present the first article on someone who does plenty of humping as well.
A far cry from Cary Grant or William Powell, Hank’s simple but individual style has been one of the most inquired about and copied since Californication‘s debut in 2007. This is interesting (and ironic?), because what makes Hank so appealing is the way that he avoids copying anyone else.

Background
The first time we meet Hank Moody is cinematic and instantly and hilariously establishes his character. With the operatic intro to the Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” playing, he pulls up to a grand-looking California church in his dirty and beat-up black Porsche. He exits the car, his permanent hangover causing him to squint at the sun through his sunglasses. A half-smoked Camel dangles from his mouth. He removes the sunglasses, looks at the church with agony, and raises his hand to the cigarette. Continue reading
