WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

Happy The Pitt Thursday to all who tune in! Especially here in my hometown of Pittsburgh, we’ve been riding high on the success of The Pitt as it continues through its second season.

Conceived by ER creator R. Scott Gemmill and longtime star Noah Wyle as a way to retool the medical drama three decades later, the series trades the late-’90s urgency of Chicago County General for a 21st century emergency department shaped by COVID’s lingering trauma, internet-fueled health misinformation, staffing shortages, and the growing threats of gun violence. And for locals like me, the show’s Pittsburgh specificity lands with a wink, flavored by local institutions from Primanti’s to Wiener World.

The Pitt is set at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC), a composite of Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side (which provided the hospital exteriors) and UPMC, with its unmistakable tower standing against the skyline during the opening titles and the roof-set scenes bookending the first season. The Pitt follows a grayer, steadier Wyle as Dr. Michael Robinavitch (“but everyone calls me Dr. Robby”), senior attending in the ED. Far removed from the fresh-faced John Carter, Robby is a seasoned, pragmatic, and quietly haunted leader who delegates with trust, shoulders blame, and never asks of his team what he wouldn’t do himself.

Each season’s fifteen episodes unfold in real time over a single hour of a shift that begins at 7:00 a.m., capturing the relentlessness of “the job that keeps on giving… nightmares. Ulcers. Suicidal tendencies,” as Robby quips to fellow attending Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) in the first episode.

See that UPMC tower pointing against the sky like a dark finger? There’s a nonzero chance I was working inside there on the day this was filmed!

Set on a Friday in late summer 2025, the first season emerged as one of the year’s breakout dramas, earning Emmy and Golden Globe awards for Outstanding Drama Series and Wyle’s lead performance—though perhaps its greatest accolade is the abundant praise The Pitt has received from the medical community for its realistic and deeply human depiction of life inside the modern ER from rushed treatments to the challenges faced by healthcare personnel.

What’d He Wear?

Dr. Robby’s style has been of considerable interest since The Pitt’s first season premiered, so readers interested in finding his wardrobe can click here to skip ahead to a “Shop the Look” section at the bottom of this page.

Given the series format of each season following a single day, Dr. Robby wears the same functional outfit throughout his season-long shift: a scrub top with work pants, sneakers, and a zip-up hoodie nodding to the Pittsburgh setting.

“Beers of the Burgh” Zip-Up Hoodie

Costume designer Lyn Paolo posted on Instagram that “to add to the realism of  ‘The Pitt’ world, we’ve sprinkled in some Pittsburgh-specific Easter eggs through the costumes. Several of our cast and background artists are representing local Pittsburgh sporting teams and businesses, including Dr. Robby’s own signature ‘Beers of the Burgh’ hoodie.”

Noah Wyle and Taylor Dearden on The Pitt

Joined here by second-year resident Dr. Mel King (Taylor Dearden), Robby zipped his Beers of the Burgh Festival hoodie back on in “8:00 P.M.” (Episode 1.14) after his ER treated 112 casualties from the PittFest shooting.

In an interview with GQ, Noah Wyle elaborated on his character’s costume:

It’s a funny thing when you go to a wardrobe fitting to choose a season’s costumes, but you’re only going to wear one thing… so I remember thinking, I can’t put any more thought into this than Robby would put into it on a given Tuesday. So you grab what’s clean: grab that shirt, grab those pants, grab that hoodie, grab those socks, grab those shoes, out the door. So that’s exactly as much thought as I put into that costume. So I got such a kick out of seeing people wearing that hoodie for Halloween and for people selling it. It was such a random choice but seemed to work… I usually steal a piece of wardrobe for every show I’m in, and that seemed to be the most representative piece of clothing for Robby.

Printed with the “Beers of the Burgh Festival” logo over the left breast, Robby’s navy-blue mid-weight cotton/polyester fleece-lined hoodie has a navy heavy-gauge woven drawcord pulled through metal eyelets, a brass-finished straight front zipper, two kangaroo-style patch pockets, and 1×1 ribbing at the cuffs and waistband.

“I am told that we had between six and eight of those,” Wyle shared with GQ, adding with a laugh that “there was always a clean one in my room… for the most part.”

Beers of the Burgh is an annual beer festival featuring live music, food trucks, and offerings from more than 50 local breweries. The upcoming 12th annual Beers of the Burgh Festival will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at the historic Carrie Furnace in Swissvale. The festival has leaned into its sartorial association with The Pitt by continuing to offer Dr. Robby’s favorite hoodie for sale in limited quantities, ordered from wholesaler Independent Trading Company in an 8.5-oz. blend of 80% cotton and 20% polyester.

Though not exactly screen-matching to Robby's brass-zippered hoodie with its fleece-lined hood, you can't get more official than a hoodie straight from the Beers of the Burgh Festival! Price and availability current as of Feb. 19, 2026.

Black FIGS Scrub Top

With the exception of the unfortunate medical student Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) who rotates through a handful of fresh scrubs after being splashed with ranging bodily fluids, all of the Pitt’s staff wear the same scrubs in their job-informed colors: black for emergency doctors (including student-doctors), gray for nurses, blue for medical assistants, and purple for specialists. Within those guidelines, the staff wear an array of brands based on personal preference; Drs. McKay (Fiona Dourif) and Santos (Isa Briones) wear Jaanuu while Drs. Collins (Tracy Ifeachor) and Robby wear FIGS.

Named for the fruit’s traditional healing properties and the coverage associated with its leaves, FIGS capitalized on its association with the series by tailoring a one-of-a-kind midnight-blue tuxedo that Noah Wyle wore while accepting his Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series in September 2025.

Due to the rigors of their wear and care, modern scrubs are almost entirely made from synthetic fibers like polyester and rayon, sometimes with spandex for additional stretch. Robby’s black FIGS Chisec Three-Pocket Scrub Top™ is made from the brand’s proprietary FIONx™ fabric—a soft, moisture-wicking, anti-wrinkle blend of 72% polyester, 21% rayon, and 7% spandex, also treated with Silvadur™ antimicrobial technology, “which provides odor protection, inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeast, algae, and other microorganisms that cause odor and fabric damage, and increases the lifespan and durability.”

Robby’s black short-sleeved scrub top has a V-neck, two set-in pockets with openings hid along the vertical side seams, and a patch pocket over the left breast where he clips his ID badge. The FIGS branding has been removed from this chest pocket, though its small logo of an asymmetrical white cross is still present on a gray tab sewn onto the end of the right sleeve.

Noah Wyle and Isa Briones on The Pitt

Though Dr. Robby had worn the full two-piece shirt and pants in the flashbacks to 2020, he only wears the top throughout the first season, layered over a white cotton crew-neck short-sleeved undershirt.

You don't technically need to be a doctor to wear scrubs (which are very comfortable), but you don't want to steal medical valor! Maybe just pair it with a beer hoodie and Carhartt pants? Price and availability current as of Feb. 19, 2026.

Carhartt Cargo Pants

Robby’s work trousers are the Carhartt Relaxed Straight Ripstop Double Front Cargo Pants in a warm brownish-taupe marketed as the “dark coffee” colorway, constructed from an 8-oz. ripstop blend of 59% cotton, 39% polyester, and 2% spandex.

Currently stocked as the BN5461-M, replacing the older B342, these flat-front utility pants are touted by Carhartt for their “numerous slide-in pockets and cargo pockets with snap button closures to keep your most essential tools and accessories secure and accessible,” just the array of capabilities preferable for an attending who needs easy access to the tools of his trade, be they his iPhone, pens, a fellow doctor’s pilfered pills, or a power-up snack.

Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby on The Pitt

The pockets include two slanted front pockets, each equipped with a Cordura®-reinforced ledge, with an additional small patch pocket inside the right-hand pocket. Two large patch pockets are positioned over the seat, the right-side pocket adorned with Carhartt’s curved golden logo inside a white square patch. A wide hammer loop connects the back-right patch pocket and the front-right side pocket. A large patch pocket is positioned over each thigh, covered by a flap with two brass-finished snaps; the left pocket has a single slide-in pocket set-in over it while the right cargo pocket has two asymmetrically sized pockets atop it… bringing the trousers’ grand total to ten external pockets.

The trousers have a mid rise to just below Wyle’s waist, where Robby holds them up with a dark-brown leather belt most clearly seen in “9:00 A.M.” (Episode 1.03) as a flustered and full-bladdered Robby fumbles to re-fasten the gunmetal-toned single-prong buckle during his first of several aborted attempts to pee. The gusseted crotch allows more comfortable stretch between the legs, while the relaxed fit keeps it roomy through the seat and thigh. The straight cut continues through the legs down to plain-hemmed bottoms.

New Balance 990 Shoes

Jazz Tangcay noted in her Variety interview with costume designer Lyn Paolo that each principal actor had at least ten pairs of shoes that would age over the course of the 15-hour shift: “We consciously spoke to each actor individually and said to them, ‘Tell me about your feet. What are the problems? What are the good things? What are the bad things? What can you see yourself wearing for nine months and knowing that you’re going to be on your feet 12 hours a day, every day?'”

Robby exemplifies classic “dad comfort” in his black-and-silver New Balance 990v5 sneakers. New Balance debuted the 990 series in 1982 as a premium running shoe, blending performance credibility with upscale materials and a then-unusually high three-figure price point. Over time, it evolved into a cultural staple—equally at home on serious runners, suburban dads, and fashion insiders—thanks to its balanced proportions, layered suede-and-mesh construction, and reputation for comfort and durability. “Simply put, the 990 is the shoe so good, that we’ve never stopped making it,” describes the New Balance website.

Robby’s 990v5 sneakers have black synthetic mesh uppers with black flat woven laces pulled through five sets of eyelets. The signature “N” and “990” branding are silver for a contrast against the all-black uppers, coordinating with the multiple shades of gray rubber outsoles. He wears them with plain white ribbed cotton crew socks.

Amidst the tragedy of navigating a parents through their son’s fatal overdose in “12:00 P.M.” (Episode 1.06), Robby allows himself a moment of levity—and a chance to boost his patient satisfaction scores—with the elderly Ginger Kitajima (Shu Lan Tuan), after she insisted that the physician owed her a dance.

Released on May 8, 2019 with a retail price of $175, the 990v5 refined this legacy with a breathable mesh upper trimmed in pigskin suede, ABZORB cushioning, and lightweight foam ENCAP® midsole support. This model was superseded by the 990v6, introduced in 2022 with softer FuelCell foam replacing the ABZORB and ENCAP® technology.

New Balance no longer sells the 990v5, though the newer 990v6 and—curiously—the older 990v4 are still available online. The black-and-silver 990v4 model more closely follows the design and aesthetic of Dr. Robby's 990v5 shoes. Price and availability current as of Feb. 19, 2026.

SEIKO Field Watch

The Pitt features great examples of affordable yet reliable watches that would actually be worn by hospital staff, from war veteran Dr. Abbot’s Smith & Wesson Grenadier and med student-turned-resident Whitaker’s Timex Expedition to dependable nurse Perlah (Amielynn Abellera) in her stainless Casio Databank and tough-as-nails charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) in her blacked-out Luminox Navy SEAL, plus the usual array of smartwatches that have become ubiquitous in the 2020s.

In the pilot, Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) notes you can “practically set your watch” to the 7:30 a.m. arrival of nursing-home patients, and—in Dr. Robby’s case—you definitely could: he wears a Seiko SRPG35 from the brand’s 5 Sports line, a realistic choice for a senior attending who would favor something reliable, affordable, and entirely unflashy when every second counts.

Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby on The Pitt, Episode 1.11: "5:00 P.M."

Given the show’s real-time format, the minute-by-minute action is usually reflected on his wrist, such as when he rubs his face for what feels like the millionth time at the end of “5:00 P.M.” (Episode 1.11) and the seconds indeed tick close upon 6 o’clock.

Maintained by Seiko’s in-house caliber 4R36 movement, the design was inspired by classic military field watches, right down to its 12/24-hour dial of LumiBrite-applied Arabic numeral indices against the round black dial. Water-resistant to 100 meters with a 41-hour power reserve, the watch also has a day-date window at the 3 o’clock position.

The matte-finished stainless steel 39mm case has fixed 20mm lugs, fastened to a khaki nylon NATO strap that gets stained with blood during the traumatic final episodes of the first season—requiring Robby to either clean or replace it by the second season.

Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby on The Pitt

Whether he’s checking vitals or quietly marking a time of death, Dr. Robby actually uses his watch, established as his go-to throughout both seasons to date, including flashbacks to the Pitt during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in summer 2020.

As of 2026, Seiko has discontinued the exact model of SRPG35 worn by Noah Wyle on The Pitt, but it's a recent enough issue that mint versions can still be found on Amazon and other sites. Price and availability current as of Feb. 19, 2026.

All Other Accessories

Typically pulled on for reading or charting, Robby’s full-rimmed optical glasses are likely the Cremieux SOHO model with green-and-black “pine” mixed plastic frames, clear 45mm rounded lenses, and a keyhole bridge.

At the start of the first episode, Robby strides into the hospital sporting a set of tan transparent acetate-framed sunglasses, which have been identified as the MOSCOT BILLIK SUN in the “cinnamon” colorway with Calibar Green glass 47mm lenses.

Under his shirts, Robby wears a thin gold curb-chain link necklace with a gold Star of David pendant, revealed when he grasps it while reciting the Shema prayer during his panic attack in the pediatric ER-turned-morgue in “8:00 P.M.” (Episode 1.14).

The brand is clearly legible in the first and last episodes of the season, but Facebook ads have made it damn clear to me that Dr. Robby’s backpack is a Tom Bihn Synapse 25 in the earthy brown “ursa”-colored ballistic 210 Cerylon nylon. Measuring 20 inches high and just over 13 inches wide, this backpack has five exterior water-repellent zip pockets in addition to a half-zip main compartment—all lined in a moss-green nylon ripstop.

Thank to my industry comrades in digital marketing, Facebook advertising has made it abundantly clear to me that Dr. Robby carries this exact Tom Bihn backpack in the first and last episodes of The Pitt's first season... and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered buying one of my own! Price and availability current as of Feb. 19, 2026.

If you really want to get technical, Robby and his fellow providers rotate through countless boxes of disposable blue latex-free nitrile rubber McKesson Confiderm 3.8 Nitrile Exam Gloves, specifically designed for making the most of their limited one-time usage with textured fingertips and beaded cuffs.

Season 2…

Robby updates his look for the second season, riding to work in an “Aged Penny” cotton canvas Taylor Stitch Workhorse Hoodie, then changing into a de-branded “Torrey Pine Green” fleece Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Jacket in the ER—suggesting that PTMC must crank the A/C as it’s hardly cool enough in Pittsburgh to wear fleece jackets on the fourth of July. He layers his black FIGS scrub top over an olive long-sleeved T-shirt, worn with the same Carhartt work trousers in black.

Stay tuned for a follow-up post on that look!

What to Imbibe

The first season ends with a yinzer-certified touch as Robby and Abbot join some of the day-shift crew in Allegheny Commons Park to drown the traumas of their extended shift with cans of Iron City. “If she’s old enough to put in a chest tube and intubate, she’s old enough to drink a beer,” Robby touts of the 20-year-old med student Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez).

Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby on The Pitt, Episode 1.15: "9:00 P.M."

Despite his hoodie-informed knowledge of myriad “beers of the ‘burgh”, Robby also knows that some days call for a cold, classic Iron City.

Named for a chief export from a city described as “hell with the lid off”, Iron City’s story dates to 1861 when German immigrant Edward Frauenheim founded one of the first American breweries to produce a lager. Within five years, the Iron City Brewery outgrew its original facility on 17th Street, so Frauenheim moved operations to a larger plant at Liberty Avenue and 34th Street, where he would eventually be enter into a partnership with Leopold Vilsack… who I mention specifically because I was always curious about Vilsack Road in Glenshaw.

By the start of the 20th century, Iron City joined a trust with twenty other breweries and, together, the Pittsburgh Brewing Company would be one of a handful of American breweries to survive Prohibition by producing near beer, soft drinks, and ice cream. Mergers and acquisitions continued through subsequent decades, with a major boost in the late 1970s when the newly debuted I.C. Light swiftly captured a majority of southwestern Pennsylvania’s local light-beer market—also bumping Iron City beer’s regional popularity back to the top.

Iron City and I.C. Light were again revitalized during the 21st century after the introduction of I.C. Light Mango on the 150th anniversary of the brewery’s founding, followed by a handful of other flavor-forward brews. But, as illustrated by Robby, Abbot, and their colleagues, the classic 4.7% ABV Iron City lager endures.
