Background

One Battle After Another has been a 2025 awards season favorite, collecting more than a few small accolades from organizations like the BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, heading into the Academy Awards this weekend with 13 nominations including Best Picture. While it was the most expensive production of Paul Thomas Anderson’s ten released features to date, it has also quickly become the director’s highest-grossing with a box office of $209 million and counting.

(Update: Sure enough, One Battle After Another received the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as wins for Anderson’s direction and adapted screenplay, Sean Penn’s supporting performance, editing, and the inaugural Oscar for Best Casting!)

In his seventh Oscar-nominated performance, Leonardo DiCaprio stars as “Ghetto Pat” Calhoun, a former revolutionary in an underground militant group known as the French 75, whose expertise in explosives resulted in his reputation as the “Rocket Man”. Amidst their explosive activities, Pat and his French 75 comrade Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor) raise a daughter named Charlene, only for Pat forced to go on the run with Charlene after Perfidia’s perfidy sends the surviving revolutionaries sprawling.

Series: The Pitt (Season 1)
Air Dates: January 9, 2025 to April 10, 2025 (Season 1)
Creator: R. Scott Gemmill
Costume Designer: Lyn Paolo

WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

Happy The Pitt Thursday to all who tune in! Especially here in my hometown of Pittsburgh, we’ve been riding high on the success of The Pitt as it continues through its second season.

Conceived by ER creator R. Scott Gemmill and longtime star Noah Wyle as a way to retool the medical drama three decades later, the series trades the late-’90s urgency of Chicago County General for a 21st century emergency department shaped by COVID’s lingering trauma, internet-fueled health misinformation, staffing shortages, and the growing threats of gun violence. And for locals like me, the show’s Pittsburgh specificity lands with a wink, flavored by local institutions from Primanti’s to Wiener World.

The Pitt is set at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC), a composite of Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side (which provided the hospital exteriors) and UPMC, with its unmistakable tower standing against the skyline during the opening titles and the roof-set scenes bookending the first season. The Pitt follows a grayer, steadier Wyle as Dr. Michael Robinavitch (“but everyone calls me Dr. Robby”), senior attending in the ED. Far removed from the fresh-faced John Carter, Robby is a seasoned, pragmatic, and quietly haunted leader who delegates with trust, shoulders blame, and never asks of his team what he wouldn’t do himself. Weapons: Josh Brolin’s Waxed Work Jacket

Josh Brolin in Weapons (2025)

Vitals

Josh Brolin as Archer Graff, housing contractor and concerned father

Maybrook, Pennsylvania, Spring 2025

Film: Weapons
Release Date: August 8, 2025
Director: Zach Cregger
Costume Designer: Trish Summerville

WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

Following the breakout success of his directorial debut Barbarian (2022), writer-director Zach Cregger returned with another provocative and unsettling horror film: Weapons, released this August.

Set in the fictional small town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania (but filmed just outside Atlanta), the film opens with a chilling mystery—seventeen elementary school children from the same classroom inexplicably flee their homes into the night at exactly 2:17 a.m., leaving only one—the quiet and withdrawn Alex Lilly (Cary Christopher)—returning to class the next day. What unfolds is a nonlinear descent into communal fear, grief, and suspicion, as the town struggles to comprehend the incomprehensible and, in doing so, turns inward with paranoia and blame.

On its surface, Weapons plays as a darkly comic horror thriller, but beneath the genre trappings lies a sharp allegory about how communities process trauma—or fail to, demonstrating the all-American patterns of reactionary hysteria that have cascaded over centuries from the Salem witch trials to post-9/11 nationalism and COVID-era scapegoating. Weapons particularly sparked interpretation on a broader commentary on America’s systemic failure to protect children as—rather than confronting the deeper institutional issues like gun violence, trafficking, or the opioid crisis—communal trauma habitually devolves into a blame game, lashing out at convenient targets from violent video games to a troubled new teacher.

The scapegoat here becomes the latter: Justine Gandy (Julia Garner), a recently hired teacher with a complicated past but no clear connection to the children’s disappearance. Suspicion still grows, fueled by the town’s need for closure and driven by panicked parents like local contractor Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), whose son Matthew remains among the missing. As his desperation increases, Archer ultimately pairs with an unlikely ally to channel his pain into action. Continue reading

Trap: Josh Hartnett’s Chore Coat and Striped Sweater

Josh Hartnett in Trap (2024)

Vitals

Josh Hartnett as Cooper Abbott, firefighter, family man, and fugitive killer

Philadelphia, Fall 2023

Film: Trap
Release Date: August 2, 2024
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Costume Designer: Caroline Duncan

WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

I’ve been eager to see Josh Hartnett’s career renaissance after a fascinating arc, from late-’90s heartthrob turned prestige TV lead on Penny Dreadful to his triumphant reemergence on the silver screen with a supporting role in Oppenheimer and his crispy leading role in Trap, M. Night Shyamalan’s darkly comic psychological thriller Trap that was released last summer.

Hartnett stars in the latter as Cooper Abbott, a Philadelphia firefighter who takes his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a sold-out pop concert headlined by superstar Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan)… only for the entire show to be the titular trap designed by law enforcement to ensnare him, as it turns out the minivan-driving family man has a dark, deadly secret under his affable persona. Background

It seems like every month I’m checking in on my man Walton Goggins, but I can’t help myself after seeing how Alex Bovaird’s Emmy-nominated costume design dressed Rick Hatchett exactly in my summer aesthetic on The White Lotus. Whether he’s in wild tropical-printed shirts and cargo pants or a chic matching set from Dandy Del Mar, Rick’s vacation wardrobe hits all the right notes.

I first discovered the Cali-based brand Dandy Del Mar back in 2020 through their retro-informed swimwear and terry-forward loungewear, and as the brand’s collection of leisurewear has grown, so has my personal stash. (This isn’t a sponsored post, I swear—I’m just a big fan!) Naturally, I was thrilled when I saw Rick sporting one of their matching sets during his emotional reunion with Chelsea on the beach in Koh Samui during the latest season finale.

As this summer draws closer to an end, let’s look back at how Rick Hatchett dressed toward the end of his fateful stay at the White Lotus this year. Continue reading

Walton Goggins on The White Lotus: Storytelling Through Pattern Play

The White Lotus just earned 23 Emmy nominations for its third season, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, and seven acting nods—among them Walton Goggins, recognized for his turn as Rick Hatchett.

While I’m on vacation this week, it feels like the perfect time to share this guest article focused on the style of a man on vacation—Goggins’ very own Rick—written by Katherine Manweiler, founder of Montage, the storefront for media and culture that turns on-screen style into personalized fashion discovery.

WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

Now that we’re more than a week into summer, I’m revisiting one of my new favorite sources of warm-weather style inspiration: Walton Goggins as the sardonic Rick Hatchett in the latest season of The White Lotus.

We meet Rick alongside his much-younger girlfriend Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) as they arrive by boat to the Koh Samui resort, where he quickly earns the ire of the Ratliff family by defiantly refusing to put out his cigarette. In tow: a suitcase full of loud shirts, plenty of emotional baggage, and a simmering grudge tied to resort owner Sritala Hollinger (Lek Patravadi) and her husband Jim (Scott Glenn).

Though Rick’s true motives grow more dangerously apparent as the season unfolds, our early impressions are limited to Chelsea’s casual comments: he doesn’t work much, he’s not quite balding enough to qualify as an “LBH” (loser back home) like her new friend’s all-too-familiar paramour, and her genuine desire that he take better care of himself. But as we quickly learn, Rick is often his own worst enemy. Continue reading

With Memorial Day weekend ushering in the unofficial start of summer, many gents are rotating their whites to the front of their closets.

On the latest season of Mike White’s anthological black comedy The White Lotus, costume designer Alex Bovaird contrasts the gloomy attitude of self-appointed vigilante Rick Hatchett (Walton Goggins) with an insouciant wardrobe of vibrant tropical shirts and bleached tailoring that he pulls together across the season’s final three episodes for his mission of revenge against the man he believes responsible for his father’s death: ruthless land baron Jim Hollinger (Scott Glenn). WARNING! Spoilers ahead!

Background

This weekend, revelers gathered on the Thai island of Ko Pha-ngan for the monthly Full Moon Party, a celebration that coincided this month with the start of Songkran—the vibrant three-day festival observing the Thai New Year. While the April Full Moon Party is often the biggest of the year for this reason, the 2025 celebration is especially significant as it markst he 40th anniversary of the first Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach in 1985.

The intersection of Songkran and the Full Moon Party was depicted on the most recent season of The White Lotus, which ended last Sunday. While most characters from the ensemble cast were removed from the central Songkran action, the privileged Ratliff brothers Lochlan (Sam Nivola) and Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) joined their new friends Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) on the island for a night of neon-lit chaos and self-discovery.

Among The White Lotus‘ characteristically excellent ensemble cast, the third season offered a breakout performance for 21-year-old Sam Nivola as Lochlan, the shy youngest sibling navigating the uncertain space between adolescence and adulthood and the masculine and feminine forces in his family.
