Suggestions and Feedback

“I wore a pretty great tux in To Catch A Thief. Will you be doing a post on that anytime soon?”

I’m always looking for new BAMF Style content ideas, so if you’re ever watching a film or TV show and think, “Hey, that BAMF has great style…” you should know where to go. Post your ideas in the comments below or email thesartorialbamf@gmail.com! Nothing is necessarily out of bounds, as long as there’s enough to be covered.

I try to be as accommodating as I can be to requests, but this page is solely a labor of love—not a content factory!—so please be patient and mindful of the fact that this is a personal blog, I’m just one guy, and there is unfortunately very little chance that I will live long enough to watch (let alone take screenshots and comprehensive notes) about everything that has been requested.

Feeling extra motivated to see your suggestion covered on BAMF Style? Click here or the below button to contribute a donation… and be sure to mention if there’s a specific character, movie/TV show, and/or clothing you’d want to see covered!

    Rex Harrison in “midnight lace”

Thank you for your great work!!!

OK OK, I admit that I am currently binging Justified. And I keep thinking, dam, that Boyd Crowder wears some nice jackets so on a hunch, I searched “Boyd Crowder Jacket” and found this site. I love the Interwebs!! Thank you for your attention to detail! I am sending your site to my 24 year old son. He needs some fashion schooling. Thanks for being here!!

    • luckystrike721

Thanks for the kind words, Cathy! I know there will be plenty of posts coming from Justified in the future as well for both Boyd Crowder and Raylan Givens – I hope you’re enjoying the show! Please let me know if there are any other shows or movies with style you admire and would like to see featured here.

  3. Tom

How about an analysis of Tom Selleck in the 1984 movie Lassiter. He plays a very dapper jewel thief in 1930’s London just before the outbreak of WWII

    • luckystrike721

That sounds like a movie I really need to see! Great suggestion – thanks, Tom! (By any chance, are you the filmmaker who made Rising Fear or is that another Tom Getty?)

    • luckystrike721

Hey William! Sorry that I haven’t gotten to these requests yet. I have a few of Pitt’s looks from Mr. & Mrs. Smith lined up, so I hope to have something up soon. I’m with you on JFK too – love the style in that and want to get something posted. Usually when I screencap a movie for this site, it takes about twice as long as it normally would to watch it. Looking to move some things around on an upcoming weekend so I can put six hours toward revisiting JFK and screencapping Costner’s (and anyone else’s) outfits for here. Thanks!

  4. Jeff

Mike Milligan is season 2 of Fargo. Easily the most badass character of the season, sporting some cool Western-style looks that seemed to be a thing in the ’70s. Just a suggestion.

  5. Rob

Hi, Out of Sight was on TV last night which sent me here looking for the type of shoes George Clooney is wearing for the robbery at the end. Any chance of being able to ID them?

    • luckystrike721

Great movie! I’ll have to check on that, Rob. I’ve been meaning to watch it and screencap it for the blog, so maybe I’ll be able to discover more info about Clooney’s shoes for you during the process. Thanks!

  6. Rob

Not related to a movie I know but in a number of films (The American, Bourne etc) the protagonists are wearing hiking boots. Do you have any recommendations on stylish hiking boots that I can use for office / casual wear in the winter months?

  7. Sir Edward Percival Fox-Ingleby, Bt

What about a look at James Spader’s wardrobe in The Blacklist? That would be interesting. Thanks.

  8. Sir Edward Percival Fox-Ingleby, Bt

Speaking of Lee Marvin…How bout his turn as Henry “Rico” Fardan in The Professionals? His boots alone rate a post. He’s even sporting a cardigan at one point. And oh so many guns! Plus Woody Strode’s bow, of course. Thanks.

  9. Goldy

I love the site. I was just watching my favorite romcom, Grosse Pointe Blank, and I was taken aback by the sunglasses that Cusack wore in it. I really had trouble identifying them. I was wondering if you could do a blog post on the movie. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

  10. Andrew

If I could suggest a movie that might be of some interest – particularly given the attention given to the older James Bond entries on this blog – 2015’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” has a lot of 1960’s, Cold War Bond era fashion on display. If you haven’t seen it, I think it does a much better job of capturing the feel of the classic Bond films than any of the recent installments (although, I should note that isn’t a criticism – I appreciate the direction of the franchise after the 90’s veered in self-parody).

Great blog. Enjoy the attention to detail, and the volume of work you put out is nothing short of admirable.

    • William Kennedy

Mr. Heckles on friends. Im joking obviously but some of the fucking suggestions on this thing ________________________________

    • luckystrike721

Thanks, Andrew – I appreciate the kind words and the helpful suggestion! I really enjoyed that movie when it came out, and I was sure to notice the great style of its two leads. I plan on screencapping it soon and crafting some posts about the suits and casualwear seen on screen. Thanks again!

    • luckystrike721

Definitely! There’s a lot out there about this outfit, so I’m looking to confirm as much as I can for an in-depth and detailed post, possibly timed around an upcoming Car Week segment. Thanks!

  11. Randy LaFoy

I would like to use one of the images for a TedTalk I am doing. Are these pictures in Creative Commons so I can use one? I need one of James Bond wearing a hat. My talk is coming up REALLY soon. Could you reply (offline)?

  13. H.F.

I agree with Gui, Roddy Piper and Tom Skerrit are the BAD GUY!

Anyway, are you lookin for something new?

JOHN WAYNE in “McLintock” wore one of the coolest western jacket ever seen! in “Hatari!” you could find fine safari clothes! Check out “True Grit”; “The Searchers” and “The Quiet Man” his most iconic roles!

How about Pierce Brosnan in “The Thomas Crown Affair”? And James Spader & William Shatner in “Boston Legal”?

  15. RM

Putting in a request for some John Woo; ideally Ah Jong (Chow-Yun Fat) from The Killer or Castor Troy (Nicholas Cage) from Face Off.

  16. William Kennedy

I can find virtually nothing online about Steve Mcqueens wax like jacket in The Cincinatti kid. Some info would be great

Hi from Gleb in Russia. I would like to thank you for your work. A wonderful site for lovers of classic men’s fashion and good movies. Thank you very much!

I don’t know, have you received such suggestion before, but how about Gary Grant in “An Affair to Remember”?

If you don’t mind I will attach a couple of pictures:

    Amazing!

    • luckystrike721

Terrific idea, Gleb! I really appreciate your kind words and your suggestion to write about Cary Grant’s very suave character in An Affair to Remember. I forgot about his great looks in that film, and I will definitely revisit it to take screenshots and get a post up here soon. Thanks!!

    • Ryan Hall

Cary Grant wore an unusual mid grey pinstripe suit pictured above. It looks like a regular business suit, but it has casual patch pockets that you see on sports jackets and sporty suits. a mix of formal and casual that Grant has worn before in films.

  18. Gleb K.

Hi from Gleb in Russia. I’d like to thank you for your work. A wonderful site for lovers of classic men’s fashion and good movies. Thank you very much!

I don’t know, have you received such suggestion before, but how about Gary Grant in “An Affair to Remember”?

  19. Jeff

I’ve been on a Boardwalk Empire kick lately, and I’d love to see some more characters on here. I think Richard Harrow and Owen Sleater would fit in nicely. Perhaps even Nelson van Alden, if he isn’t too strange to you.

  20. Eric Langlois

I just got the chance to see China Seas, a 1935 Clark Gable/Jean Harlow adventure flick. Gable wears a great action-back summer suit in the opening scene, and the rest of the film gives some examples of mid-30s formal wear (the unfortunate white mess jacket was at its height of popularity then). Also, Wallace Beery’s colonial attire includes a cummerbund worn with a casual linen suit, which is something I’ve never seen before in film.

    • luckystrike721

Thanks, Eric – that sounds fascinating! I hadn’t heard of China Seas before, but I’m definitely adding it to my list. It sounds like there are some very unique sartorial gems. (Plus, Jean Harlow…)

      Much appreciated!

  21. H.F.

you’re a George Clooney’s fan, I suppose 🙂 .. Did you ever watch “from tusk till down”? Fuckin BAMF!!

For the car week, you should considerer Harrison as Bob Falfa in “American graffiti” and Rutger Hauer in “The Hitcher”.

  22. RM

How about some of the nerdier BAMFs out there?
    Sherlock Holmes in Elementary
    Walter White in Breaking Bad
George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    • luckystrike721

Great ideas! Definitely adding those to my list. I’ve seen some excellent articles out there on the significance of color in Walter White’s wardrobe (and, in fact, the costumes of many on the show!)

(Also… were you thinking the Guinness miniseries of TTSS, the Gary Oldman movie, or both?!)

      • RM

A comparison article would be most interesting, since they are dressed very subtly to convey character. Guinness’ orange desert boots vs Oldman’s time significant spectacles.

  23. Kevin Ong

Hey there! I really admire and appreciate the work you’ve done on this blog. I have a suggestion for you, after getting to know more about suits and then re-watching one of my favorite films, Inception, I noticed a lot of the suits were beautifully designed and made. I was hoping you would do one on Saito’s (Ken Watanabe) tan three-piece suit in the Mombasa scene and double breasted suit (he only wore it once out of various other suits). Hope you can do it soon. Thanks!!

  24. Ian Herrera

Please could you do an article on Chris Pratt’s character from Jurassic World? Or any “Nathan Drake” type character? That would be awesome. Keep up the good work!!

  25. Mikael A.

Hey. One suggestion is: Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Ghost Protocol – Blue Suit. Very nice suit indeed

  26. ninjafang

    Hey there!

I’ve been watching the BBC series Luther and I think the character, John Luther is definitely sharply dressed. Of course it doesn’t help that it’s Idris Elba playing the man.

Could you do an analysis of his classic outfit? Thanks so much!

P.S. Keep up the great work. You’re a wonderful blogger!

    • luckystrike721

Thanks for the very kind words – much appreciated! From photos and screenshots I’ve seen of Luther, it certainly looks like something that belongs on this blog! Great suggestion, and I will be sure to get to the show ASAP. Idris Elba seems to be a very stylish man; do you know if he had any input into Luther’s look?

      • ninjafang

I don’t think he did. It might have boiled down to the costume designer. I think Elba’s style is a bit more “street” savvy considering he did his own line in Superdry. But then, with his physique it’s nigh impossible to make him look bad I think.

Have fun with the show! It’s definitely one of the darkest and drama-driven shows I’ve ever watched.

  27. dpurves

What about Patrick MvGoohan In “The Prisoner”? He certainly is BA, and even before being captured seems to dress a little differently.

    Are we sure he qualifies?
Well, he: builds his own car (and boat/raft… twice), drives a warden mad, escapes from an inescapable prison/wales two or three times and ends up either mad or in charge.

And anyone who stars in the lead of a show called “Danger Man”.

    • Swordfish

Seconded, as I suggested earlier this year, I would like to know his thoughts on Number 6’s dark suit from the first episode, with the dark polo shirt and Chelsea boots.

  28. monomatryoshka

I love your blog! All the posts are so well-researched. Would you consider doing more outfits from “The Sopranos”? Each of the made guys has a unique style.

  29. gui

Yesterday I saw a wonderful movie: run for the sun with a very cool Richard Widmark…

and, why not, Gastone Moschin in “Caliber 9”, one of the most badass italian character portrayed on the screen!

      • luckystrike721

Thanks! I’m adding all of these good suggestions to my list. I had already wondered about Don Fanucci, and your suggestion is all I needed to see in order to revisit The Godfather Part II ASAP and get a post together. I’ll also need to check out Caliber 9 and Run for the Sun as soon as I can – they sound great!

        • gui

In “run for the sun” Widmark wore a leather jacket that ispiered the indiana jones’ costume, as well as those who wear Alan Ladd in “China” and Charlton Heaston in “the secret of Incas”

Caliber 9 is the first part of the italian mafia trilogy directed by the poliziottesco specialist Fernando Di Leo.
Before you revisit the part I, I ask you a paersonal favor: Richard Castellano as Clemenza deserve a post on your blog

  30. John Smith

Brad Pitt as John Smith in Mr and Mrs Smith

Karl Urban As Kirill in The Bourne Supremacy

Matthew Fox as Picasso in Alex Cross

Colin Farrell as Ray in In Bruges

    Keep up the great work!

    • luckystrike721

Thanks for the great suggestions! I put up a post about one of Pitt’s suits from Mr. and Mrs. Smith in February (thanks to your suggestion!) and I definitely plan on a Kirill one soon. I haven’t yet seen In Bruges or Alex Cross, but a lot of people have requested to see Picasso’s outfits from the latter so I’ll definitely check them both out. Much appreciated!

  31. RM

    Some thoughts for 2017:
Lamont Cranston AKA The Shadow either in his sharp 30s street clothes or his iconic hat and cloak, the sweaty Stetson of Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood,
Bruno Anthony’s Alfred Hitchcock designed lobster tie from Strangers on a Train
and the chaotic clothing choices of the Joker from The Dark Knight.

    • luckystrike721

Love the suggestions – thanks! I’ve seen a few requests for The Shadow, so I should probably get on that; it seems right up my alley, although I’ve never seen it before. I own the other three films, so I should get to screencappin’!

  32. Eric Langlois

When I saw Rogue One over the holidays, Jiang Wen’s role reminded me of his film Let the Bullets Fly. It’s sort of an action farce in the style of Tarantino, set in 1920s Sichuan, and there’s some nice looking summer suiting in among the traditional chinese clothing. For one thing, Jiang Wen is about the only person I’ve seen who can make a straw boater look badass.

  33. Quentin

    Hello !

Thanks for your work, once again.
What would you think of Clint Eastwood Man With No Name outfit in the Leone Trilogy, and his starter costume in the beginning of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ?

  34. Lidermajer Krisztián

    Hy!
I suggest Max Payne, Tailor of Panama, Ghost Protocol, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Argo
    Thank 🙂

  35. Shea Robison

The sportcoat Ryan Reynolds’ character wears in Mississippi Grind (2015) has nice colors and interesting texture, and seems to be an important part of the character he plays. In particular, he seems to pop the collar a lot, so I’m curious what you could find out about the jacket itself and what you may have to say about the style. There is also a scene where Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn (as their characters, obviously) talk about suiting for men that might be of interest to you.

Also, I don’t know if you’ve looked at Michael Clayton (2007) with George Clooney yet. This is one of my favorite Clooney movies, in addition to The American (which you have already done and done well) and Hail, Caesar! (which might be fun to do for all the vintage clothing in typical Coen Brothers detail). There is a lot of men’s business suiting in this movie that centers around a high-powered New York law firm that might provide good grist for your mill, although I must also say that I’m not sure how good or interesting most of this suiting is, so maybe that could be a point of departure. In particular, I notice a distinct lack of pocket squares that add some panache, but I am curious what you could put together.

I enjoy your blog a great deal and appreciate the amount of work you so obviously put in to it. Keep it up.

    • Shea Robison

There also appears to be a bit of a mystery around the sportcoat worn by Reynold’s character. I have been able to find practically no information about it on the regular Interwebs, as the few Google hits that do come up reference some red and black leather jacket Reynolds wore to a premiere of Mississippi Grind. I have watched this movie a couple more times since my previous post, and I am increasingly intrigued by it and by the sportcoat itself. It has such an interesting looking texture and color, and so little accessible information about it that there must be some kind of story behind it. I also like how it appears to be such an important part of the character Ryan Reynolds plays, like a defining part of his personality, so it is an interesting use of clothing to build a character.

I would say the movie itself is good, but not great. It is a small road movie, and although technically nothing happens (as in no climactic car chases or shootouts or ‘Come to Jesus’ moments), there are some subtleties about the two main characters that play out at the end that I missed the first couple of times I watched it. As I said before, I am curious what you would be able to find out about this movie and the wardrobe choices given the resources and knowledge you have about this kind of thing.

      Thanks again.

    • luckystrike721

Love these thoughtful suggestions – thank you! I definitely have more planned from Clooney by way of The American and Michael Clayton, and I’ve been meaning to check out Hail, Caesar! too. Mississippi Grind also sounds fascinating. Much appreciated!

      • Shea Robison

You bet. I think you would find a lot of useful material from Hail, Caesar! as there are some great vintage outfits employing the customary Coen Bros eye to detail, from suits and hats to accessories (the central character’s wristwatch being a prime example–when you watch it, you’ll see), but also including cars, politics, and movie choreography. It is just a smart, fun movie, especially if you happen to be familiar with post-war Hollywood and the studio system.

Mississippi Grind is a much ‘smaller’ movie, but I think it is done well. More of a ‘slice of life’ about two pretty normal guys bouncing around the fringes of normal society. Like I said though, there are a couple of nuances to the characters that I missed the first couple of times I watched it, and while its not a ‘great’ movie per se, it is done well. But mainly I’m hoping you can find out more about the sportcoat that Ryan Reynolds’ character wears like a security blanket.

  36. Sonny

I’m a huge noir guy (both film and literary). One of my favorite films is Hammett, staring Frederick Forrest as the titular Dash. I suspect you’ll love the film, as it contains many allusions to Hammett’s real life stories, and seeing as you appear to be well read within the detective genre, it’ll be right up your alley. It’s one big “easter egg” hunt! I notice a fresh detail literally (pun intended) every time. More so, as I’m sure you would discover in your excellent background research, Hammett the movie also has a fascinating real life story behind its production.

I digress: Dash Hammett wears some AMAZING 30s style suits. Specifically an outfit with an overcoat he wears in the opening scenes, and an actionback coat ensemble later on as he confronts the “circle of power.”

The film is occassionally available on Amazon Prime. If it proves difficult to find the dvd, I’d be honored to lend you my, admittedly, well used copy.

Keep up the great work, Lucky!

    • luckystrike721

Wow – thanks, Sonny! I can’t believe I haven’t heard of that before, but I will certainly been adding it to my to-do list. Indeed, it sounds like something I should definitely watch, both for the blog and my own personal interest. Here’s hoping this is one of the periods it’s on Amazon Prime.

Much appreciated – both for the suggestion and your thoughtful write-up!

      • Sonny

After all the great films you’ve led me to, that may otherwise have passed me with nary a whisper, sending one your way is the least I can do.

Also, since I have your attention, just a quick thought on improvement for the site: perhaps, if you’re featuring music on a post, place the clip at the beginning, so we may read with a bespoke soundtrack playing in the background. Just a thought.

Thanks again, for doing for us lazy, sartorial bamfs, what we can’t seem to do for ourselves. It really is great work.

  37. Roman

Let me suggest you Man In Black from recent Westworld adaptation. While he’s a sadistic villain, there are lots of ambiguity about this character and his motivations. And he’s definitely stylish and badass (being played by perpetual badass Ed Harris doesn’t hurt either).

  38. RM

Been on a bit of a 30s/noir style binge recently inspired by the likes of Sam Lowry from Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, Det. Douglas Archer in the BBC’s new adaption of Len Deighton’s SS-GB, Howard Hughes in The Aviator; pairing a fedora with a sportcoat and tennis shoes or his flying jacket.
Also, perhaps a little fantastical for BAMF Style, Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter series, I just like his look.
    Up and atom.

  39. Thomas Getty

Perhaps a post on Brad Pitt’s outfits in the recent movie “Allied”. He sports a gray/cream colored suit in Morocco, flannels and sweaters in London, and some “night spy wear” towards the end.

    • luckystrike721

Great idea! I need to make it a priority to see Allied, as it seems to have all of the ingredients that I am looking for in a movie – and a BAMF Style post.
