I’m always looking for new BAMF Style content ideas, so if you’re ever watching a film or TV show and think, “Hey, that BAMF has great style…” you should know where to go. Post your ideas in the comments below or email thesartorialbamf@gmail.com! Nothing is necessarily out of bounds, as long as there’s enough to be covered.
I try to be as accommodating as I can be to requests, but this page is solely a labor of love—not a content factory!—so please be patient and mindful of the fact that this is a personal blog, I’m just one guy, and there is unfortunately very little chance that I will live long enough to watch (let alone take screenshots and comprehensive notes) about everything that has been requested.

Hey William! Sorry that I haven’t gotten to these requests yet. I have a few of Pitt’s looks from Mr. & Mrs. Smith lined up, so I hope to have something up soon. I’m with you on JFK too – love the style in that and want to get something posted. Usually when I screencap a movie for this site, it takes about twice as long as it normally would to watch it. Looking to move some things around on an upcoming weekend so I can put six hours toward revisiting JFK and screencapping Costner’s (and anyone else’s) outfits for here. Thanks!
Mike Milligan is season 2 of Fargo. Easily the most badass character of the season, sporting some cool Western-style looks that seemed to be a thing in the ’70s. Just a suggestion.

Not related to a movie I know but in a number of films (The American, Bourne etc) the protagonists are wearing hiking boots. Do you have any recommendations on stylish hiking boots that I can use for office / casual wear in the winter months?

If I could suggest a movie that might be of some interest – particularly given the attention given to the older James Bond entries on this blog – 2015’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” has a lot of 1960’s, Cold War Bond era fashion on display. If you haven’t seen it, I think it does a much better job of capturing the feel of the classic Bond films than any of the recent installments (although, I should note that isn’t a criticism – I appreciate the direction of the franchise after the 90’s veered in self-parody).

Cary Grant wore an unusual mid grey pinstripe suit pictured above. It looks like a regular business suit, but it has casual patch pockets that you see on sports jackets and sporty suits. a mix of formal and casual that Grant has worn before in films.

In the Tv Show “Suits” there are a lot of great suits and outfits!
I’ve been on a Boardwalk Empire kick lately, and I’d love to see some more characters on here. I think Richard Harrow and Owen Sleater would fit in nicely. Perhaps even Nelson van Alden, if he isn’t too strange to you.
I just got the chance to see China Seas, a 1935 Clark Gable/Jean Harlow adventure flick. Gable wears a great action-back summer suit in the opening scene, and the rest of the film gives some examples of mid-30s formal wear (the unfortunate white mess jacket was at its height of popularity then). Also, Wallace Beery’s colonial attire includes a cummerbund worn with a casual linen suit, which is something I’ve never seen before in film.

Hey there! I really admire and appreciate the work you’ve done on this blog. I have a suggestion for you, after getting to know more about suits and then re-watching one of my favorite films, Inception, I noticed a lot of the suits were beautifully designed and made. I was hoping you would do one on Saito’s (Ken Watanabe) tan three-piece suit in the Mombasa scene and double breasted suit (he only wore it once out of various other suits). Hope you can do it soon. Great suggestion, and I will be sure to get to the show ASAP. Idris Elba seems to be a very stylish man; do you know if he had any input into Luther’s look?
I don’t think he did. It might have boiled down to the costume designer. I think Elba’s style is a bit more “street” savvy considering he did his own line in Superdry. But then, with his physique it’s nigh impossible to make him look bad I think.
Have fun with the show! It’s definitely one of the darkest and drama-driven shows I’ve ever watched.
What about Patrick MvGoohan In “The Prisoner”? He certainly is BA, and even before being captured seems to dress a little differently.

When I saw Rogue One over the holidays, Jiang Wen’s role reminded me of his film Let the Bullets Fly. It’s sort of an action farce in the style of Tarantino, set in 1920s Sichuan, and there’s some nice looking summer suiting in among the traditional chinese clothing. For one thing, Jiang Wen is about the only person I’ve seen who can make a straw boater look badass.

The sportcoat Ryan Reynolds’ character wears in Mississippi Grind (2015) has nice colors and interesting texture, and seems to be an important part of the character he plays. In particular, he seems to pop the collar a lot, so I’m curious what you could find out about the jacket itself and what you may have to say about the style. There is also a scene where Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn (as their characters, obviously) talk about suiting for men that might be of interest to you.
Also, I don’t know if you’ve looked at Michael Clayton (2007) with George Clooney yet. This is one of my favorite Clooney movies, in addition to The American (which you have already done and done well) and Hail, Caesar! (which might be fun to do for all the vintage clothing in typical Coen Brothers detail). There is a lot of men’s business suiting in this movie that centers around a high-powered New York law firm that might provide good grist for your mill, although I must also say that I’m not sure how good or interesting most of this suiting is, so maybe that could be a point of departure. In particular, I notice a distinct lack of pocket squares that add some panache, but I am curious what you could put together.
I enjoy your blog a great deal and appreciate the amount of work you so obviously put in to it. Keep it up.
There also appears to be a bit of a mystery around the sportcoat worn by Reynold’s character. I have been able to find practically no information about it on the regular Interwebs, as the few Google hits that do come up reference some red and black leather jacket Reynolds wore to a premiere of Mississippi Grind. I have watched this movie a couple more times since my previous post, and I am increasingly intrigued by it and by the sportcoat itself. It has such an interesting looking texture and color, and so little accessible information about it that there must be some kind of story behind it. I also like how it appears to be such an important part of the character Ryan Reynolds plays, like a defining part of his personality, so it is an interesting use of clothing to build a character.
I would say the movie itself is good, but not great. It is a small road movie, and although technically nothing happens (as in no climactic car chases or shootouts or ‘Come to Jesus’ moments), there are some subtleties about the two main characters that play out at the end that I missed the first couple of times I watched it. As I said before, I am curious what you would be able to find out about this movie and the wardrobe choices given the resources and knowledge you have about this kind of thing.

You bet. I think you would find a lot of useful material from Hail, Caesar! as there are some great vintage outfits employing the customary Coen Bros eye to detail, from suits and hats to accessories (the central character’s wristwatch being a prime example–when you watch it, you’ll see), but also including cars, politics, and movie choreography. It is just a smart, fun movie, especially if you happen to be familiar with post-war Hollywood and the studio system.
Mississippi Grind is a much ‘smaller’ movie, but I think it is done well. More of a ‘slice of life’ about two pretty normal guys bouncing around the fringes of normal society. Like I said though, there are a couple of nuances to the characters that I missed the first couple of times I watched it, and while its not a ‘great’ movie per se, it is done well. But mainly I’m hoping you can find out more about the sportcoat that Ryan Reynolds’ character wears like a security blanket.

I’m a huge noir guy (both film and literary). One of my favorite films is Hammett, staring Frederick Forrest as the titular Dash. I suspect you’ll love the film, as it contains many allusions to Hammett’s real life stories, and seeing as you appear to be well read within the detective genre, it’ll be right up your alley. It’s one big “easter egg” hunt! I notice a fresh detail literally (pun intended) every time. More so, as I’m sure you would discover in your excellent background research, Hammett the movie also has a fascinating real life story behind its production.
I digress: Dash Hammett wears some AMAZING 30s style suits. Specifically an outfit with an overcoat he wears in the opening scenes, and an actionback coat ensemble later on as he confronts the “circle of power.”
The film is occassionally available on Amazon Prime. If it proves difficult to find the dvd, I’d be honored to lend you my, admittedly, well used copy.

Let me suggest you Man In Black from recent Westworld adaptation. While he’s a sadistic villain, there are lots of ambiguity about this character and his motivations. And he’s definitely stylish and badass (being played by perpetual badass Ed Harris doesn’t hurt either).
Been on a bit of a 30s/noir style binge recently inspired by the likes of Sam Lowry from Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, Det. Douglas Archer in the BBC’s new adaption of Len Deighton’s SS-GB, Howard Hughes in The Aviator; pairing a fedora with a sportcoat and tennis shoes or his flying jacket.
Also, perhaps a little fantastical for BAMF Style, Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter series, I just like his look.

Perhaps a post on Brad Pitt’s outfits in the recent movie “Allied”. He sports a gray/cream colored suit in Morocco, flannels and sweaters in London, and some “night spy wear” towards the end.
