Air Date: February 28, 1999
Director: Tim Van Patten
Costume Designer: Juliet Polcsa

Background

“The Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti”, the eighth episode of The Sopranos‘s first season, was a defining moment for the character of Christopher Moltisanti. Up to this point, he had still been more interesting than the standard TV mobster (as all characters on The Sopranos are…), but “Legend” was his—and Imperioli’s—first time to shine. Continue reading

Autumn on Mad Men – Draper’s Brown Suit in Season 2

Yesterday was the Autumnal Equinox, or – as normal people call it – the first day of autumn. If you’re looking for a good suit to wear as the leaves change and months get colder, Mad Men offers a fine sartorial suggestion from lead character Don Draper.

Vintage Hank Moody in NYC: The “In Utero” Flashback on Californication

David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone in New York City while filming

David Duchovny and Natascha McElhone in New York City while filming “In Utero”, the tenth episode of Californication‘s second season.

Vitals

David Duchovny as Hank Moody, aspiring novelist

New York City, April 1994

Series: Californication
Episode: “In Utero” (Episode 2.10)
Air Date: November 30, 2008
Director: David Von Ancken
Costume Designer: Peggy A. Schnitzer

Background

“In Utero” (2.10) is often cited as a favorite episode among Californication fans. It serves as an origins episode for Hank and Karen, popular in this era of reboots including Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Here, we see Hank as a young, struggling writer, having just met – and subsequently knocked up – Karen. The two are anything but ready for an unexpected pregnancy, as they’re both middling in their respective careers and dating other people. Adding to the couple’s problems, news has just broken of Kurt Cobain’s death by suicide, thus dating the episode’s setting to April 8, 1994.

Of course, the baby in question turns out to be Becca, the center of Hank’s life as we know it. Given that this is the artistic center of New York City in 1994, Hank and Karen are both younger, grungier versions of themselves. Continue reading

Breaking Bad: Gus Fring’s Mexican Vendetta in “Salud”

Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, Episode 4.10, "Salud". I compiled three subsequent shots that panned up from Gus's shoes to his torso to make this image.

Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring on Breaking Bad, Episode 4.10, “Salud”. This is not a shot from the finished episode; I grabbed screenshots as the camera panned up from his shoes to his torso, then compiled them together. I’m not a photo editor by any means, but I’m still pretty impressed by the result.

This week saw the return of Breaking Bad on AMC, one of the greatest shows on television today (and ever). Since not everyone has caught up (hurry up, people!), I must warn that there are some spoilers in this post.

Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo “Gus” Fring, Chilean-born meth distributor and fried chicken entreprenuer

Michoacán, Mexico, July 2010

Background

As an astute commenter on this blog once noted, Giancarlo Esposito’s character of Gus Fring was a “man of refined style” and was worthy of inclusion here. (Thanks, Roman!) After finishing Gus’s arc, I couldn’t agree more!

Though not one of the lead characters, two-season antagonist Gustavo “Gus” Fring made an impression on viewers as an affable and charming villain with a sharp sense of style (unless wearing his Los Pollos Hermanos uniform). As the all-knowing yin to Walter White’s yang, Fring was always two steps ahead with, at least until the end, no apparent Achilles heel.

Fring’s shining moment of glory is in “Salud”, the tenth episode of the fourth season. In the episode, Fring travels with apprentice-turned-master-chemist Jesse Pinkman and loyal henchman Mike to Mexico to meet with the cartel about a meth deal. Jesse is oblivious, but Mike and Gus have a dangerous plan hatched. Continue reading

Background

A guy like Hank Moody doesn’t really need more than one suit. And when a guy like Hank Moody is looking for a suit, he’ll look no further than imitating the same look that worked for Steve McQueen, Samuel L. Jackson, and the cast of Reservoir Dogs.

It also helps that Hank dresses like a hitman to a wedding that he sincerely does not support.  Continue reading

Series: Californication

Air Date: October 22, 2007
Director: David Von Ancken
Costume Designer: Peggy A. Schnitzer

Background

In the penultimate episode of Californication‘s first season, Hank Moody has spent the majority of the season wistfully hoping that his ex-wife (common law, at least) Karen will abandon her thoughts of marrying the “dial-tone” Bill and come back to Hank. He thought he had his life on track when he wrote a new novel, but it was unfortunately lost when his new car was stolen. He and Karen briefly rekindled their passions after the death of Hank’s father, but it didn’t last. Finally, Hank hit his seasonal rock bottom in “The Devil’s Threesome” when doing just that with gym rat Laura and his best friend/agent Charlie.

It’s safe to say that, by this point, Hank’s been swallowed up and shit out by the powers that be. Continue reading

Creator: Matthew Weiner
Costume Designer: Janie Bryant

Background

By the end of Mad Men‘s second season, Don Draper’s year of professional success has not been without its personal struggles. He’s still wowing clients right and left, but his home life is in turmoil after one too many extramarital dalliances—or at least a far too blatant one—landed him out of the house indefinitely. Furthermore, it’s September 1962, mere weeks away from the proverbial “eyeball to eyeball” tension of the Cuban Missile Crisis would threaten the world as they know it.
